Theatre Artibus presents The Bluebird

A wordless theater performance created by Artibus co-founder Buba Basishvili

Original music by avant-garde duo Homospouses (Lika Shubitidze and Archil Gegechkori).

March 22 to April 7, 2024

Weaving pantomime, visual metaphor and physical comedy, The Bluebird transcends linguistic barriers to deliver a poignant yet whimsical narrative of the immigrant experience through the universal language of the body.

Inspired by Buba Basishvili's own immigration journey and countless others’ stories, and Bukowski's evocative poem "The Bluebird," the production poses questions about the significance of hope in a world where dreams often feel unattainable. By intertwining their narratives of immigration, yearning, and creative expression, the artists have forged connections that transcend geographical boundaries and speak to the human experience.

Buba Basishvili, from the Republic of Georgia, was a lead performer and teacher at the Georgian State Pantomime Theater for over 15 years. Homespouses (Lika Shubitidze and Archil Gegechkori), real-life spouses with roots in Georgia and Colorado, create avant-garde baroque-pop compositions. The collaboration between Buba Basishvili and Homospouses is a testament to the power of artistic synergy and shared cultural heritage.

In 2008, Russia invaded the sovereign nation of Georgia and continues to occupy 20 percent of its territory. This turbulent history adds layers of depth and significance to The Bluebird, as it explores themes of resilience and the quest for freedom from oppression.
